Since the start of this year Renegade Empire has been whole-heartedly embracing WordPress as our CMS of choice and we’ve been working to fine tune our processes to incorporate best practices and tools to build amazing websites. It will be great to see how our systems compare with those others are using and I look forward to learning more at WordCamp Melbourne!

Unless they are offering free beer all day I’ll no doubt be writing notes diligently and will put together some useful information on this website after the weekend.

1. From Joomla admin, go to Users > Groups and create a new group called ‘Guest’
2. Still within Users > Groups, click on the ‘Viewing Access Levels’ and create a new Viewing Access Level called ‘Guest’ and assign only Guests to have viewing access
3. Within Users > User Manager > Options > Component, set the guest user group to ‘Guest’

Now when you create content you’ll be able to assign it exclusively to non-members. Works nicely for modules, menu items articles and apparently plugins but I haven’t tested that yet.

Find this code within your relevant K2 template file (item.php, category_item.php):

<?php if($this->item->params->get('catItemAttachments') && count($this->item->attachments)): ?>

Then replace it with this:

<?php if($this->item->params->get('catItemAttachments') && count($this->item->attachments) && !$this->user->guest): ?>

This just checks to make sure the user is not a guest. If they are logged in then the code will validate as true and K2 will proceed with outputting the attachments.

That’s it, all done.

If you also want to provide some text for guests instead of giving them nothing, then you can improve on this code by adding an ‘else’ statement.

So your final code will be:

Aside from the site’s slick interface and detailed statistics, fmbip let’s you create an account for free and send your client’s a custom URL to visit (such as findmebyip.com/username/your-tag) where this details information is obtained. You can then visit your account after your client has visited the URL and view information regarding their environment such as browser version, OS version, CSS3 support, HTML5 support, HTML5 form fields support and IP information. In fact as soon as you visit the link http://fmbip.com it will output your information for you straight away.

It’s the simplest and most effective way to gather information about selective user’s computers that I’ve come across. Get in to it.

Luckily the solution was simple for me and I found that solution after much search, on this website http://blog.rimann.org/2009/08/jquery-vs-ie7/. It turned out that all that needed to happen as to remove an extra comma from my jQuery code. While the other browsers just parse the code nicely, IE7 is not as forgiving.

Where I wrote:

I needed to have :

Congrats to all the artists for still getting involved in these comps, it’s good to see some real talent and legitimate artists still roaming through the streets of Melburn.

The author says this about the permission increase:

“In order to allow cross-origin XMLHttpRequests for the pulling back XML and XSL in the XML Tree Transformation page action, I had to up the permissions in the extension. Otherwise, the transformation tool would only allow HTTP URLs that originate in the same domain that the URL in the address bar is in. See http://code.google.com/chrome/extensions/xhr.html.”

This isn’t really a problem, as all you have to do it hit cancel and you’re in the clear. But after I’ve spent countless hours cleaning the shit (viruses, spyware, malware) off people’s systems that accumulates because they don’t read dialogue boxes, I can easily see how people would not even realised that they have allowed this extensions to access everything from bank account info right up to the video clip of the ex “playing” with the Bengal Tiger.

Shame on Google Chrome for allowing an extensions to do this, shame on the developer for thinking this would work, and shame on mates for showing me that damn Bengal Tiger video.
